Church plant growing roots

Middletown, DE >> Sovereign Grace Church in Middletown, Delaware, was planted in October 2004. Senior pastor Chris Patton sent us this update about the church’s growth and their upcoming “Commitment Sunday”…

The Lord has been very kind to us here at Sovereign Grace Church in Middletown, Delaware. When you plant a church, you depart from the secure confines of an established church in faith that God wants to do something wonderful. And indeed he has done something wonderful! From a church-planting team of 15 adults and two children, formerly members of Covenant Fellowship Church (Glen Mills, PA), there is now a group of 40–50 adults and 15–25 children that gathers to worship the Savior each and every Sunday. Though numbers are not a primary indicator of success (faithfulness is), it is nonetheless encouraging to see the Lord at work, bringing folks who have come to identify and embrace our vision and values. It seems God has been pleased to use a small group of people—our gifts and strengths, as well as our limitations and weaknesses—to demonstrate his power. College students, singles, and families alike are coming to enjoy the community of believers God is establishing here, as together, empowered by the Spirit, we seek to live gospel-centered lives that display something of the glory of Christ in this part of Delaware.

We will be having our first “Commitment Sunday” in June, where many who have been attending will officially join themselves in membership to Sovereign Grace Church. May this be this first of many! And as we have that first Commitment Sunday, we realize all that occurs that day will not only be a reflection of what God is doing in Sovereign Grace Church, but of how God is using the people of Sovereign Grace Ministries in powerful ways to touch the lives of others they may never see or meet.

"Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory!" (Psalm 115:1)
